At Hatch we empower entrepreneurs like you to imagine, launch and grow sustainable and impactful businesses through our programmes.
There is a distinct lack of support necessary to meet the basic needs of purpose-driven entrepreneurs. Purpose-driven businesses are often forced to contend with additional challenges that many of the current support systems are not equipped to deal with, such as a lack of funding from traditional support mechanisms. As a charity we can relate to these challenges, and the difficulties overcoming them while maintaining your mission and traversing the business landscape.
Purpose-driven businesses are essential in addressing some of society’s most pressing issues, providing you with the tools you need to realise your mission is core to our goal and through our programmes we can support you in achieving organisational resilience, financial sustainability and most importantly, the ability to effectively scale your impact.
Our mission to empower underrepresented entrepreneurs to imagine, launch and grow sustainable and impactful businesses through tailored support, community and partnerships plays an important part of how we design and deliver our programmes. We use our own experiences, those of our partners, experts and feedback from over 700 Hatch alumni to form the basis of our programmes.
We co-design each programme with the cohort, which means no two programmes are ever the same and every one is tailored specifically to the entrepreneurs’ needs at that point in time.

The environmentalist on a mission to ensure our future is free of single-use materials and pollution.
16 million tonnes of plastic is predicted to enter our oceans in 2030, double the current rate. This does not include inland pollution or that by other materials like metals and glass. After seeing how flooded her waterways were with plastic pollution, Lizzie Carr decided to set up Planet Patrol.
Planet Patrol is a community-focused, solution-orientated, non-profit organisation: a movement of people working for a cleaner future. Liz joined the Planet Patrol team in 2018 and sits at the helm of delivering all Planet Patrol’s global campaigns.
The Hatch programme has been incredible from both a personal development and organisational development perspective. I have been really impressed with how the Hatch team quickly adapted the programme for a virtual environment and the strength and diversity of experts and speakers at each session.
I found the programme to be an important day of the month - a day to take a bit of time away from the busy day to day and focus on strategy, think outside the box and think through learnings for the organisation as a whole.

A full-time lawyer with a serious sweet tooth who set out to create an ethical, luxury, free-from ice cream with a conscience.
When out with friends Jane found it difficult to find tasty free-from desserts which were not laden with chemicals. In 2019, she decided to set up Mama Dolce, a luxurious ice cream brand with flavours that do not compromise on taste, and free from eggs, dairy, soy, nuts, wheat and gluten. They are also committed to better serving the communities that they operate in by supporting students from low socio-economic backgrounds to gain credible opportunities to work in the food and beverage industry.
I have become more confident and have used the tools that Hatch has provided me with to develop a stronger business model which has enabled me to develop a much stronger brand message. Through the expert sessions, I have been able to set up a much stronger support network and have been able to use the help that I have received to strengthen my business proposition.

A changemaker who figured out her purpose is to disrupt and improve black history education.
Growing up Dana rarely saw heroes who looked like her or her ancestors. And sadly, even when her parents wanted to share stories about their past, they just didn’t have enough information about their ancestors because it was never passed down to them. It was almost as if their history had been erased.
As an adult, she taught herself about genealogy and began researching her family history. While learning about her ancestors and gaining insight into where she came from, she figured out her new purpose: to disrupt and improve history education. In 2016 she set up Ancestors UnKnown to provide heritage education to students to help them discover their ancestors and untold histories worldwide.
The primary change is my increased confidence. I now feel like I have the tools and skills to grow my business, even in the face of setbacks and challenges.
In addition, I have acquired new partnerships, created 3 new revenue streams (online course, consulting, and Bristol school/ community partnership), developed a fundraising plan (grant funding and angel investment), AND registered the business as a CIC in the UK! Now, I’m inspired and believe I’m fully capable of turning Ancestors unKnown into a strong, unique, sustainable, and world-changing organisation.

Hackathons are for changemakers who have identified a problem that they care about and want to find a business idea that addresses that challenge through an enterprise solution. Over a weekend, these future changemakers rapidly collaborate on a project to work on a solution or prototype for a specific problem, which helps to bring that business solution to life.
Launchpads are for entrepreneurs who have a business idea, understand the problem they are trying to solve, and are ready to start their entrepreneurial journey. Launchpads are usually shorter pre-incubation programmes, compared to Incubators and Accelerators, with more general learning objectives for startups in an earlier stage of ideation.
Incubators are for entrepreneurs who have been running their business for some time and are ready to start focusing on growth and expanding their team.
Accelerators are business and leadership programmes that have been designed for entrepreneurs who are ready to scale their business and impact.
Every programme we run at Hatch has different application criteria that allows us to best tailor our support for the targeted communities or groups they’re designed for.
For example, social enterprises would qualify for Hatch’s Impact programmes, and founders who identify as female would be eligible for our Hatch Female Founders programmes. In general, solo-entrepreneurs or founders with a team whose operations are based in the UK can apply for our programmes.
For the Hatch Impact Launchpad the eligibility criteria is:
- You have a business idea that will address social or environmental issues and would like to launch your own impact business
You can express your interest in one of our programmes using the application form on our website. Try answering the questions in the form in as much detail as possible, as we don’t ask applicants to submit a business plan or model. The programme manager will then be in touch to let you know if you are invited to an interview as the next stage. In the interview, we will ask questions about yourself and your business to see if you are a good fit for the programme. After the interview, we’ll let you know if you have been selected to take part in the programme.
Depending on the programme, the application process will be continuous or with strict deadlines.
At Hatch, we find that the value delivered by our programmes increases when they are designed for specific audiences at specific stages. Ideally, entrepreneurs would move up the Hatch ladder, starting with Hackathons, Launchpads, Incubators and then finally an Accelerator. However, if you’re not sure where you fit, get in touch and we’ll help you figure out which is the right programme for you.
Different programmes offer slightly different types of support. Every Launchpad, Incubator and Accelerator programme is co-designed with founders, meaning each cohort is able to tackle their most pressing business challenges through a programme that is tailored to their specific needs. In general, the common elements between programmes tend to be:
- Expert-led workshops
- Mentorships, consultations, and 1-2-1 peer support
- Networking and events
- Support in developing a pitch and opportunities to practice them
- Connections with investors and fundraisers
- Membership of Hatch’s community of founders
Until further notice we will continue to run all of our programmes online.
Thanks to our incredible funders, we are able to offer the programmes at a massively reduced rate.
Hatch programmes are equity-free, but our founders often pay it forward in other ways, such as helping other entrepreneurs in the Hatch community with connections or through peer-to-peer mentoring.
As most early-stage programmes, Hatch cannot sign an NDA, but we won’t share any confidential information from the application process or interviews.
A large proportion of the Hatch team either have been or are entrepreneurs, so we understand how tricky it is to commit to recurring meetings when life is so busy. However, one of the most encouraging pieces of feedback we receive from entrepreneurs is that our programmes allow them to take a step back, to work on the business rather than in it. Providing an opportunity for founders to take a much needed step back from the day-to-day operations and focus on their business strategy. When applying to our programmes it is important to understand that your participation must be at least 85% as it contributes to the overall cohort experience.
- Hackathon 20 hours (two days)
- Launchpad 40 hours (6 week programme)
- Incubator 50 hours (6 month programme)
- Accelerator 60 hours (6 month programme)
Some programmes will provide grants whilst others will not. Please check for this information in the programme details of your interest or get in touch.
Formal mentoring, workshops and consultancy meetings will last the length of the programme, but there are other ways to continue our support indefinitely. By becoming a Hatch alumni, you will be part of our ]community on Slack, where you can continue to interact, be invited to events, engage with fellow entrepreneurs, hear about the latest news and opportunities, and fundraising opportunities.
If you’ve changed the way you run your business for the better, or you have an experience that makes you more of an expert in a particular area or subject, and it’s something you’d like to share, why not become a mentor and help others? We have different mentoring initiatives that could fit what you’re after, please get in touch.
