A blackboard reading: 2025?

If you have a big idea, a big goal, a big vision, it can be hugely daunting. Yes, it’s exciting and it’s the kind of thing that can get you out of bed in the morning, keep you up at night and shun your Netflix binging, but it’s still really overwhelming. Starting can be hard, especially if you’re surrounded by people who don’t really get what you’re trying to do or why you’re trying to do it. And when you manage to overcome that block, you can be greeted by more concerns and issues that can stop you making progress.

Does any of this sound familiar?

It’s the whole reason that You’ve Got This came about. Because the feelings above – the thoughts, doubts, self-talk and overwhelm, are things that are shared by so many people. I’d go as far to say most at one time or another. But in the shiny social media world we inhabit, the reality of achieving big things can be overlooked and replaced by something that simply shows the highlights. Whilst these can be inspiring, they can also create a false narrative that can be used to fuel any self-doubt.

And then you have incredible people with brilliant ideas who feel like they can’t achieve their dreams, when that’s simply not the case.

When writing You’ve Got This, I spoke to many incredible entrepreneurs and business leaders who shared their journey. From Theo Paphitis who left school without a qualification to his name to Jo Franco who found herself as an immigrant in a country where she couldn’t speak the language.

What’s true of every person I interviewed is their ability to see blocks as challenges, to turn failures into learning opportunities, to not let a ‘no’ mean anything more than a ‘let’s try that again’, and their dogged determination to keep going, even when things get tough. This is all explained through case studies, stories, and a side of strategy in the book that helps the reader to understand and overcome these barriers and really own their greatness.

Let’s get you started on the right path.

The importance of being clear on what you want

If you don’t know where you’re heading, you won’t know when you arrive – or how to get there! Think of it like a car journey – you know where you’re going before you get in the car, you don’t just drive around aimlessly hoping you’ll end up somewhere you quite like!

Decide what you want, and then get specific. Think about the SMART goal setting concept (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Timebound). As I say in the book, I have queries on a few of these points, but specific, measurable and timebound are important. You don’t just want to ‘get more customers’, you want 12 new customers in the next six months, for example.

Then break it down and think ‘how’?

Break that goal down. Taking the ’12 new customers in six months’ idea, that’s two new customers a month. Now think how are you going to get them. What needs to be in place for you to appeal to your target audience, for them to understand what you offer, and for them to see how what you do will make their life easier?

Meet your audience where they are

There’s a saying along the lines of ‘make it and they will come’. You know what’s better? Find where they are and go to them! This might be easier than you think. Ask yourself, where does your target audience hang out? What do they read/watch? What social media platforms do they use? How can you make sure that you’re there? If you’re not sure, find people who would be in your target audience and ask them the above!

Don’t fear failure

To be real with you, you can do all the above and people will still say no to what you have to offer. And that’s OK. Don’t see a no as failure. To be a successful businessperson, it’s important to reframe every ‘no’ as a learning opportunity. What went well? When did you lose them? What language did they use to explain their pain points? If you have rapport with someone, a ‘no’ can be the biggest gift as feedback lets you adjust and go again. And even if it’s a no, it could well be a no for now rather than a no forever

You’ve Got This!

Forging your own path isn’t easy, but the highs are unbeatable. The bumps in the road, the challenges, the overwhelm, the lack of confidence- you’re not alone, they’re part of your journey and your ability to manage them will make you better at what you do – even if it doesn’t feel like it at the time! The fact you’re out there, doing the work, means you’re already taking charge of your destiny. Be in no doubt, You’ve Got This!
