Introducing Sarah and her business Power of Uke!

What inspired you to start this journey?

The original conception was two years ago, sitting in a hostel bed in Colombia. A team I used to work for sent me a video of them playing the uke and singing before a team meeting, something that would never have happened previously. It made me realise the power of the ukulele to bring people together and create happier workplaces and I wanted to spread the love!

More recently I started doing supply teaching in a reception class (4 and 5 year olds) and realised how free they are to play and explore, and how we lose that so quickly when we get into the structures of normal school, and then the workplace. I became really passionate about bringing play back into offices. So Power of Uke now has a long term vision to shift the culture of workplaces and encourage at least #5minsofplay a week.

What has been the best part so far?

Getting my logo and business cards and feeling like a real entity!

What has been the hardest part so far?

Sometimes when you are on your own journey you have no concept of how fast you should be going; how much progress you should be making. That’s why having the other Hatchlings and a mentor has been so helpful.

If you could have any enterprise related super power, what would it be and why?

To be able to complete a task before starting a new one, because I have a million ideas every second and find it hard to stay focused.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

I will be running Power of Play with a team of people delivering a range of workshops to teams all over the world. #5minsofplay will be trending and part of work well-being legislation and I will have a viral TED talk on the importance of play at work. Failing that, I’ll be busking around Europe with my ukulele.
