About Hatch Enterprise

At Hatch, we empower underrepresented entrepreneurs from across the UK to imagine, launch and grow sustainable and impactful businesses through tailored support, community and partnerships. We offer world-class support to entrepreneurs, mainly through our courses and workshops. 

Since 2014, we’ve grown our revenue to £850K, something that takes the average social enterprise at least fifteen years. Now we’re looking at our next big milestones: Passing the million turnover mark, and 10X’ing our impact. We want to do this by 2025. This is a deliberately ambitious target – we like that it scares us a bit!

We’re not typical of the charity sector. As you would expect from a charity focused on teaching start-up skills, we think and act like a business. Our programmes are run by entrepreneurs, for entrepreneurs. 

In the last seven years, we’ve worked with over 5,000 underrepresented founders and we want to do even more in the next five years. To support our founders, we have built a diverse network of partners, funders and investors who share our vision. We are currently developing our first small grants fund to connect our existing support programmes with the financial support founders need to test and launch their ideas.

Impact, Evidence and Learning Manager

  • Salary:  £30,600 – £41,400
  • Contract Type: Permanent 
  • Hours: 4-5 days per week.  (typically 09.30-17.30 with flexibility)
  • Location: Elephant & Castle / Remote
  • Responsible To: Operations Director

Role Purpose

Are you a data enthusiast? Would you relish the opportunity to help us figure out what works, why and how in the support we offer to underrepresented entrepreneurs and social entrepreneurs? Can you help us understand and communicate our impact in innovative and effective ways both internally and externally?

As a brand-new post in a rapidly growing organisation, you will have a lot of scope to develop your role and Hatch’s approach to Impact, Evidence and Learning, working closely with colleagues from across our programmes, communications and fundraising teams. Our entrepreneurial approach means you will have the trust and confidence of the team as a given and will be responsible for developing and delivering effective systems, processes, data, insights and reports that evolve with Hatch as we grow. 

Specifically you will:

  • Lead on developing and implementing our impact measurement framework across all Hatch programmes
  • Develop and implement systems and tools for monitoring and evaluating Hatch’s impact within and across programmes
  • Support our culture of learning and continuous improvement, taking a data-led approach
  • Review and make recommendations for the implementation of data collection, management and analysis tools in line with a wider overhaul of Hatch’s IT systems. 


Developing Hatch’s approach to monitoring, evaluation and impact measurement 

  • Owning and leading on any updates to Hatch’s Theory of Change
  • Developing and continually improving Hatch’s evaluation framework and internal monitoring systems, tools and approach in line with our Theory of Change
  • Innovating the monitoring, evaluation and learning methods and practices used at Hatch, ensuring we remain cutting edge and responsive to the needs of both founders and funders 
  • Implementing bespoke projects such as longitudinal studies to measure the long-term impact Hatch has on founders, their businesses, community and beyond
  • Reviewing opportunities to measure the impact we have in the wider eco-system with our volunteers, funders and partners.  

Data collection, analysis and reporting 

  • Working with colleagues in the programmes team to deliver impact reporting for our core programme portfolios for entrepreneurs imagining, launching and growing their businesses in line with Hatch’s Theory of Change and individual funder requirements:
    • Impact Portfolio
    • New Founders Portfolio
    • Community Portfolio 
  • Developing and continually improving Hatch’s approach to collecting programme and post-programme monitoring data and information through surveys, case studies, focus groups and more to assess our outputs and outcomes within and across programmes
  • Ensuring that impact data is accurate, up-to-date and accessible to Hatch colleagues across the organisation, including through setting up standard reports for common reporting needs such as Board reports and funder reports and maintaining a library of up-to-date impact data for use across the team. 
  • Working with colleagues to prepare content for regular funder reports, relevant impact data for our Trustee’s Annual Report and leading on the production of our annual Impact Report 

Data administration 

  • Scoping and making recommendations for Hatch’s impact database needs as part of a wider project to upgrade Hatch’s IT infrastructure
  • Owning and continually developing the impact measurement systems in line with evolving programme and data needs
  • Ensuring all data is collected, stored, reported and shared in line with GDPR requirements, including when working with funders and partners 
  • Mapping the data Hatch holds from current and past programmes to the new data collection framework and importing to new systems as appropriate 

Learning, Knowledge Building and Sharing

  • Supporting the capture, analysis and utilisation of qualitative data including founder feedback, founder case studies, volunteer feedback etc to support consistent knowledge building and communication (internally and externally) about what we do and why, how it works, and the difference our work makes 
  • Undertaking analysis of quantitative and qualitative monitoring information, and contributing to a data-driven approach to knowledge building, innovation and continual programme improvement
  • Building the capacity of the team to use the impact measurement framework and tools for data gathering, management and reporting to meet the needs of Hatch and our funders and partners
  • Working with colleagues from across Hatch to evidence and communicate our impact and learning with internal and external audiences, including ensuring our case for support is data driven
  • Supporting the marketing and communications team to access and use quantitative and qualitative content for online and offline positioning, brand building and other activities intended to share knowledge, learning and influence in the enterprise development sector and beyond

Additional responsibilities 

  • Staying up to date with trends and developments within the sector, including attending events, joining professional networks and collaborating with others where relevant.  
  • Staying up to date with regulatory and best practice developments in relation to monitoring, evaluation and impact measurement in the sector
  • Other duties that may be required from time to time as part of a small, dynamic team

Person Specification

  • An all-rounder, able to develop our impact strategy and deliver on the details
  • Demonstrable experience designing, developing and maintaining impact measurement, analysis and reporting systems processes 
  • Analytical and quantitative skills including handling complex data sets
  • Qualitative skills including the ability to capture and interpret data from interviews, focus groups, case studies etc. 
  • Project management skills 
  • Ability to work with complexity and change and to make the best use of available data 
  • Works well on their own initiative and can be relied on to get the job done in a busy working environment 
  • Interpersonal team working skills, including experience with internal advocacy, influencing and capacity development 
  • Creative, innovative and cutting edge, ready to bring and to work with bold ideas
  • Entrepreneurial, not afraid to shoot for the stars, make mistakes and learn along the way
  • Commitment to ongoing learning and personal development

We have always been supportive of flexible working, which has become even more important in 2021. We have a cheerful, plant-filled office in Elephant & Castle, where everyone gets a desktop Mac and a good chair. For those working at home, we’ll provide you with a laptop and an allowance to get yourself set up comfortably at home. In the post-COVID world we’re experimenting with full flexibility to work from home or in the office as it suits you, but hope the whole team will be able to come together periodically. 

  • 29 days annual leave + 8 UK bank holidays
