My name is Leo, I’m a second year doctor and I’m taking a gap year out to grow my business, Equally Possible.
Equally Possible is an online video course tailored to people who want to apply to UK medical schools.
Currently, applying to medical school in the UK is a very tall task and it usually takes about 2-3 years of preparation. Usually the people that are most prepared are the ones that happen to go to private school or have the money to go to live courses that teach them how to prepare. What we want to do is we want to put all of that information into a very affordable online course that everyone can buy for a reasonable price. That way we can level the playing field, reducing the information disparity for the people who are applying and encourage more underprivileged applicants to apply.
I’ve been helping underprivileged teenagers into medicine for about 7 years, but I realised that most of the things I was saying, I was pretty much repeating myself. That’s when I realised that I could actually record everything and have everything on a watch on demand basis so that applicants could just absorb it at there own pace, and ultimately sort of get a lot more out of it. I’ve helped about 40 kids individually, and they’ve all gone and done very well now, and some are almost graduating, so, yeah it’s pretty good! I’m happy.
In five years I hope that most people recognise it as a very viable and reputable source of information, and that whenever people think of applying to medical school, they’ve got the current options and our option which is a brand new way to learn this information, and hopefully it can become a market standard, so you can be like oh, everyone is going to pay £30 to buy that course because you need that kind of thing, that’s what I want!
What is the best thing about starting Equally Possible?
I just came back from holiday and it’s the first time that I’ve ever come back from and was excited to go back to work, and that sort of drive and excitement is unmatchable. I’ve done a lot of different things in my life but for me medicine is a job, and doing that, you have a sort of duty more than being like “ I really, really want to go to hospital and spend 12 hours there!” – This I’m really, really, really excited about it, it’s just pure drive and excitement and that’s the best part.
What are some of the struggles you’ve faced?
I think it’s mostly time management and also being a doctor with no business experience, and so I have to learn everything. It can also be very lonely just like, working on it everyday on your own. You have colleagues but not people that you see every day.
If you could have any enterprise related super power what would it be?
I’d be such a good designer that I could design anything in a way that you would have to buy it, but I’d be so good that I don’t have to pay for someone else to design it.
